CUSTOMISED EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS:
THE FOROF EXPERIENCE
FOROF, the art and cultural institution founded by Giovanna Caruso Fendi, is investing in the development of cultural mediation to transform visits by teachers and students to the spaces and archaeological site of Foro Traiano 1 into an active experience of learning and growth. An invitation to take education beyond the traditional classroom, in a unique place where past and future, archaeology and contemporary art, architecture, design and research coexist.
FOROF provides an ideal setting for interdisciplinary and highly customisable educational programmes. Each workshop is designed by the team according to its audience - from primary and secondary school students to Italian and international universities and higher education institutions - adapting the language, areas of focus and methods of engagement to the participants’ age, interests, fields of study and objectives.
With students from Liceo Tasso in Rome, for example, the visit became a participatory investigation: through questions, observations and clues gathered along the way, the students independently developed their final interpretation of Alicja Kwade’s Heavy Light, part of the site-specific installation INFRASUPRA, experiencing first-hand the work of a cultural mediator.
For students from the University of Arkansas, the programme was tailored to their interests in architecture and urban design, exploring the redevelopment of the spaces, the dialogue between contemporary interventions and the archaeological site, design choices, materials, and the relationship between light, architecture and site-specific installations. Students from Arcibiskupské Gymnázium - the Archbishop’s Grammar School in Prague - took part in a programme that combined a visit to the archaeological site with a Smelling Session led by renowned ‘nose’ Laura Bosetti Tonatto, expanding the FOROF experience through the sensory dimension.
A Place Where Learning Means Experiencing
Taking part in an educational workshop designed by FOROF means encouraging observation, critical thinking, participation and dialogue. It is never simply a traditional guided tour, but rather a learning experience in which students are invited to interpret, experiment, ask questions and build new connections between different disciplines.
FOROF is a powerful place, where the value of freedom is cultivated and the energies preserved within an extraordinary archaeological site are reactivated through a new contemporary vitality. This is why every lesson and experience within this unique setting enriches education with new meanings and shared values.
